Pottery in Mexico<\/a> dates back thousands of years before the Pre-Columbian period, when ceramic arts and pottery crafts developed with the first advanced civilizations and cultures of Mesoamerica. It was that time of human civilization when mankind was more used to stoneware. The making of earthenware began to replace stone utensils in Mexico really early. Ceramics has been the most practiced craft in Mexico, because of the fact that the local people over there use household accessories made out of this earthenware.<\/p>\n

While the production of vases<\/a>, pots and utensils is Mexico’s signature pottery, ceramic floor and wall tiles consist of the bulk of Mexico’s ceramic production. A relatively new tradition in ceramics is called “folk art”. These pieces are mostly decorative, such as figures, tiles and fine wares such as casseroles, teacups and dishes. These are produced for the Mexican upper class, the international market and tourists. But apart from these, Mexican pottery produces another very interesting thing called the Mexican wedding vase<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Wedding Vase is an ancient vessel still used in traditional Christian wedding ceremonies. One spout of the vessel represents the husband; the other, the wife. The looped handle represents the unity achieved with marriage. The space created within the loop represents the couples\u2019 own circle of life. The wedding vase is a treasured and sacred tradition among many people. These vases are not only symbolic in the ceremony performed just prior to the wedding itself, but also in the shape and construction of the vessel.<\/p>\n
