Art to Celebrate Juneteenth

Today is Juneteenth, a holiday that is integral to American history. It commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 to be exact — when the last enslaved African-Americans were informed of their emancipation. It was on that day that the news spread to Galveston, Texas, one of the deepest parts of the former Confederacy.

Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, and has been celebrated for decades through family gatherings, jubilees, parades, and public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. Celebrate Juneteenth and African American heritage by decorating your home with Craft Montaz African crafts and art from countries such as Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Zambia to commemorate African origins and culture. Our handmade paintings, wall art, traditional masks, and wood carvings are perfect for celebrating the rich African heritage.

Colorful African Wall Mask

Although this wall mask from Ghana is modest in size, it is quite striking. Artist Awudu Saaed of Ghana crafted this mask, carving it by hand from rubber wood and embellishing it with colorful recycled glass multicolor beads. The artist named his creation Domeabra, which translates to “come to me if you love me” from the Akan language. It is a fair trade product from Ghana, Africa. Place this colorful mask on your living room or bedroom wall, or for more of an eye-catching effect, hang it in the entryway of your home.

Hand Carved Thinker Statues from Senegal, Africa

These Thinker statues embody the cultural richness of Senegal, the country where these pieces are hand-carved. Over the years, the Thinker symbol has become quite popular in African art because of the cultural value of thinking instead of reacting. On Juneteenth, place this delicately carved black statue in your workspace or bedroom to emit calmness or place it in your living room as an artistic centerpiece.

African Batik Art

With a fiery orange colored base, this unframed wall mount from Burkina Faso depicts the tribal dancers of the country. Hand painted with acrylic colors, this wall art celebrates a heritage of traditional dancing, music, and art. This art is hand painted by the local Burkina Faso artists. All of the Craft Montaz batik arts are original creations and sourced directly from Africa. Place the panel in your entryway, living room, study, or bedroom.
