Home Décor- Turtle

Turtles are considered one of the most auspicious and lucky animals in many cultures.

Turtles are frequently depicted in popular culture as easygoing, patient and wise creatures. Due to their long lifespan, slow movement, sturdiness and wrinkled appearance, they are an emblem of longevity and stability in many cultures around the world. Turtles are regularly incorporated into human culture with crafters, painters, photographers, poets, writers and sculptors using them as subjects.

Turtles have an important role in mythologies around the world. The turtle has a prominent position as a symbol of steadfastness and tranquillity in religion, mythology and folklore. A tortoise’s longevity is suggested by its long lifespan and its shell, which was thought to protect it from any foe.In the cosmological myths of several cultures a turtle carries the world upon its back or supports the heavens.

Marble Turtle with Etched Work

Creation is also associated with the tortoise. Here is an interesting story about Hindu mythology:

In the Hindu religion, turtles are considered to be the second carnation of the powerful God Vishnu.  Legends go on to say that after a great flood, which occurred every four billion years and dissolved the earth, the God Vishnu transformed himself into a great Turtle.  The turtle carried a vessel on his back, in which the Gods and demons mixed the elements necessary to re-create the globe.  After a thousand years, when the earth has been reborn, the great Turtle remains in place and on his back now stands a large elephant that supports the planet. Turtles have also been said to be symbols of immortality and are considered temporary dwelling places for souls that are making their way through a series of lives that are on the path to Nirvana.
