Unique Peruvian Pottery

Peru is a South American country, situated on the Western coast of the continent. It has a variety of landscapes ranging from mountains, beaches, and rain forests. What comes to mind for most people when thinking about Peru is the country’s capital, Lima, and the ancient historic Inca citadel and fortress, Machu Picchu. Peru is also well known for its rich culture, in which Peruvian art is at the forefront. Art in Peru can be traced back to the 9th century BCE.

Chulucanas ceramics have become an important part of Peru’s national history because of their aesthetic appeal and the techniques used to craft the pieces. The town of Chulucanas in the Piura river valley of Peru is known for this style of unique pottery making. This ceramic turtle figurine is made by Peruvian artist Rogger Crisanto. Place the turtle in the entryway of your home, on your living room table, or on your bedside table to add a pop of ethnic flavor to your home. Pair it with other collectable trinkets or figurines for home decoration.

Ceramic Owl Sculpture

Chulucanas pottery was developed by using techniques from pre-Inca times. These unique ceramic pieces are thrown and smoothed totally by hand. A liquid clay slip is placed over the exterior. Liquid clay is used to cover with minerals and herbs those areas or designs that they want to keep intact in color. The areas they want to darken are exposed. The piece decorated this way enters the smoking oven, where mango leaves have been used. This ceramic owl sculpture depicted here adorns a beautiful array of colors which is popular in Chulucanas pottery decoration. The intricate, handcrafted design draws one’s eye to the vase. Place it on a bookshelf in your living room or keep it as a centerpiece on a table. You will surely have a story to tell your guests about this beautiful owl sculpture!

Ceramic Dove Figurine

When the ceramics are dry, they go to the wood oven and burn at a temperature of between 700 and 900°C approx. During this reduction burning, the mango leaf used as fuel will generate smoke that will darken the ceramic, and will also produce a resin that, when adhered to the ceramic, will give it the characteristic shine of Chulucanas style. This reduction burn is done 2-3 times depending on the desired dark tone, achieving a wide range of brown tones until reaching solid black. If you are looking to brighten up a room in your home, this dove figurine will do just that with its jovial colors contrasted with the black tone created by the reduction burn. Add a taste of traditional animal design and ethnic Peruvian art to your home.

Ceramic Elephant Figurine

This artistic elephant figurine displays a beautiful ethnic pattern. With its trunk raised up in the air it adds a flavor of entertainment when used as a decorative piece! The elephant’s contrasting black and white colors also draw attention to its design. Place the ceramic figurine on a living room or coffee table as a decorative ornament to showcase Peruvian culture and Chulucanas art in your home.
